GWP’s VISION is a water secure world. Our MISSION is to advance governance and management of water resources for sustainable and equitable development.

OUR UNIQUE VALUE: GWP mobilises action on the global water crisis through a unique combination of social capital, shared values, credibility within the global water community, bottom-up orientation, and expertise. A network of networks, we ensure the ‘voices of water’ can inﬂuence local, national, regional, and global development priorities. We are committed to our role as a neutral convener and respected for our focus on inclusiveness and sustainability.

GWP Regions

This is where you can find links to the websites of our Regional Water Partnerships (RWPs). RWPs are closest to the countries where we work. They share knowledge and learning across national boundaries and are expected to have an open, inclusive, and gender-sensitive policies for bringing together as wide a group of stakeholders as possible to solve water problems.

Patrons

The Global Water Partnership has several Patrons. The Sponsoring Partners may invite persons of high public stature and influence to take on the role of Patron.

A GWP Patron represents GWP to leaders, policy makers, media, and the general public. They may also be requested to advise GWP on its work or represent GWP leadership at a high level event.

President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf
President Sirleaf is the 24th President of the Republic of Liberia and the first elected female Head of State in Africa.

In 2011, she was one of a trio of women to win the Nobel Peace Prize "for their nonviolent struggle for the safety of women and for women’s rights to full participation in peace-building work." In her efforts to contribute to peace and development in Liberia and the world, she co-chaired a United Nations High-Level Panel of Eminent Persons on the Post-2015 Development Agenda last year. She was later chosen by the Authority of Heads of State and Government of the African Union to work towards an African common position in the final post-2015 document. President Sirleaf is also a Goodwill Ambassador for Water, Sanitation and Hygiene in Africa.

Letitia Obeng
GWP former Chair (2008-2012)

Dr Letitia Obeng, a Ghanaian, holds a Ph.D. in public health and water resources engineering from Imperial College, University of London. She was Chair of GWP 2008-2012.
Prior to joining GWP, Dr. Obeng spent 25 years at the World Bank. During her time at the World Bank, Dr. Obeng worked with sector ministries and communities, on policies, strategies, project preparation, implementation and evaluation while partnering with other aid assistance groups and organizations.
Over the years Dr. Obeng has also worked on other sustainable development areas such as water resource management, environment, environmental health, growing capacity, waste management, community development and rural development. Dr. Obeng held managerial and director positions in Africa, Middle East and North Africa and Latin America and the Caribbean and, at the Corporate Level as Director, Office of the President. She has a passionate interest in sanitation.

Margaret Catley-Carlson
GWP former Chair (2000-2008)

Margaret Catley-Carlson was Chair and is now a Patron of the Global Water Partnership. She is on the board of several organizations focussed on improving water resources management and agricultural productivity including the Foresight Advisory Committee for Group Suez Environment, the Crop Diversity Trust, the UN Secretary General’s Advisory Board on Water (UNSGAB), the Canadian Water Network, and the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI), among others. She is on the juries of the Stockholm Water Prize, the Tyler Environment Prize and the Perinbam Award, and on the Council of Advisors of the World Food Prize and the Library of Alexandria.

Catley-Carlson is formerly: President of the Canadian International Development Agency; Deputy Executive Director of UNICEF; President of the Population Council; and Deputy Minister of the Department of Health and Welfare of Canada. She has ten honorary degrees and is an Officer of the Order of Canada.

Ismail Serageldin
GWP former Chair (1996-2000)

Dr Ismail Serageldin was the first Chair of GWP (1996 to 2000) , former Vice-President of the World Bank, and currently Librarian and Director of the Bibliotheca Alexandrina. He is also former Chairman, Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR, 1994-2000). He has published over 60 books and monographs and over 200 papers on a variety of topics including biotechnology, rural development, sustainability, and the value of science to society.

Kingdom of Netherlands

(served as GWP Patron from 1998 to April 30, 2013, upon inauguration as King)

Willem-Alexander Claus George Ferdinand, Former Prince of the Netherlands, became a Patron of the Global Water Partnership in 1998. Since 1997, he has been closely involved in the field of water management, in both the Netherlands and elsewhere.

Kader Asmal (d. 2011)
Former Minister of Water Affairs and Forestry, South Africa

Kader Asmal was elected to the National Assembly, and joined the cabinet as Minister of Water Affairs and Forestry in May 1994. During his tenure he supported the Global Water Partnership. In 1996, the World Wide Fund for Nature-South Africa awarded Asmal their Gold Medal for his conservation work. While serving as Minister of Water Affairs and Forestry, he also served as the chairman of the World Commission on Dams (1997–2001). He was Minister of Education from 1999 to 2004.
